Nature Watch - Harebells

Learning about the natural world helps you to connect to it as you walk. Big views are amazing, but the micro universe can be just as beautiful.

Wildflowers are in abundance at this time of year and, if you’re paying attention, the side of the path you’re on can look like a work of art.

The bobbing blue bonnets of harebells are seen from July to September in hedgerows, on hillsides and cliff paths throughout the UK.

Harebells like dry, undisturbed ground so look in the long grass at the side of the track.

Look for delicate, blue, bell-shaped blooms, long trailing stems and club shaped leaves at the base.

Harebells look fragile but are surprisingly robust and all kinds of bees love them. They are a vital part of the ecosystem.

Victorian parents would tell their children that fairies slept in the bells and in Scottish mythology, witches used the petals in potions to transform people into hares.
